Student finds America’s death rate from gun violence a depressing, embarrassing fact

I am a student from Clovis North High School wishing to take action against gun violence. After the recent school shooting in Florida, I hope this opens the city’s eyes to a new way of approaching guns.

I have never been one to support guns or any action of violence, but I am hopeful as I see my generation trying to make movements against gun violence. The United States is the worst for gun violence, and this is not recognized enough.

Global News states, “American firearm death rates are almost three times higher than Canadian death rates of ovarian cancer and Parkinson’s; 42 per cent higher than Canadian prostate cancer deaths; 10 percent higher than pneumonia.”

It comes as an embarrassment and a depressing fact to be a part of a nation letting deaths from guns come this far with no action. With the younger generation not being able to do any more than protest, it is good to see students making an effort, opening people’s eyes and saving lives.
